How To Keep Mice Out This Summer

There is no time of the year where pests aren’t a concern for homeowners, but the risks are often greatest miceduring the warm summer months, as all animals are out and about. Additionally, in hot climates, small animals such as mice seek out shade and shelter as a way to escape the sun, meaning they are looking for places to settle down. Mice infestations are awful to deal with, so here are a few quick tips to help avoid any future headaches.

Check Home For Cracks

First, check your home for any cracks, holes, openings which mice would squeeze into.

Some mice only need a hole the size of a quarter, so be diligent and leave nothing up to chance.

For the most part, the focus should be on openings on the ground level or close to it.

Homes shift on their foundation over time, and small cracks can lead to openings you might not even know about. Cracks in doorways and windows are also possible entry points, so keep an eye out for those too.

Seal Your Food

Next, take care to seal food away in containers and cupboards. This is a good rule of thumb to keep all sorts of pests away, and it includes mice.

Naturally, the animals aren’t just looking for a place to live and escape the heat, they’re looking for food. Due to their small stature, they don’t need a lot to find good food in your home.

Crumbs, fruit, bread, cookies or crackers that are left out attract mice inside, so take care to keep those food items sealed and away from where pests could get to it.

Clean Crumbs and Food Residue

Lastly, clean all crumbs and food residue, including pet food. Mice are happy to just munch on what crumbs they can find, but if there are no crumbs to be found they will have to turn away.

Most people know this and will clean up after themselves, but you also need to clean up after your pets when they eat, too.

Pet food also serves a meal of mice, and any left out is a clear beacon to them that they can come and enjoy. Make sure to keep pet food sealed and away just as you would with normal food, and don’t leave food out unless it’s feeding time.
