Rabbit Rascals Running Amok in Your Yard?

Stop rabbits before they get into your yard and eat your plants!

Stop rabbits before they get into your yard and eat your plants!

Have you seen Peter Cottontail running around in your yard yet? It’s a little early, but he is sure to come. Sometimes, particularly if you have a lovely vegetable garden in your backyard, rabbits will come in droves to destroy your landscape. Thankfully there are some simple ways to deter these little critters before they get the best of your garden.

Plants to keep nearby

There are certain plants that rabbits aren’t very interested in. So, it might be prudent to go ahead and incorporate some of them into your gardening plans. Herbs like basil, mint, and oregano usually go unbothered by rabbits. There are also a few varieties of lovely flowers such as geraniums, peonies, and lavender that also don’t attract rabbits.

Methods of deterring them

There are several kinds of deterrents on the market that aren’t lethal to rabbits, but they have some mixed results. Sonic or scare devices can deter rabbits and other pests for a time, but they can often grow accustomed to the noise. Rabbit repellant sprays can also be sprayed around your garden and yard. If you have a dog, then you can let the dog play in the yard to spread its scent. Rabbits probably don’t want to come into contact with a hunter, so they might steer clear. Another thing you can do to deter these creatures is to make sure your yard lacks proper shelter for them. Don’t let grass get to high. Don’t leave piles of leaves around the yard. Make sure there are no little holes for the rabbits to burrow into an you should be safer.

Removal and Protection

You can humanely trap your troublesome guests or you can have us do it for you. Once your yard is free of rabbits, you need to go ahead and protect it. Installing a small fence around the garden might do the trick. Make sure that the fence doesn’t have any holes or openings that a rabbit could slip through. You should also make sure that the fence is high enough so that the rabbits can’t jump into your yard. So, use fencing that is about 2-3 feet high.
