If the animals are in your home and causing problems, you probably want to put them back outside. But a lot of our customers don’t dislike their household pests–as we discussed last week, an opossum is not a threat, and is likely just lost. If you enjoy the presence of these animals, but want to keep them outside in their natural habitat, here’s how you can make a great, humane backyard to keep them safe.
Keep a fresh water source
All living things need water to survive. Animals aren’t going to live in your yard if you don’t give them the proper means–a pond is a great source of water for many types of animals. They’ll even bring animals who will permanently stay in your yard for its habitat, including turtles and frogs. Water is a strong indicator to animals that they can survive in your yard.
Cats should stay inside
All cats should be indoor cats. They can hurt themselves by running around alone, and despite what you may think about them being from the wild originally, you’ve raised them to be domestic. They may not know when they are in very real danger. And, of course, your cat can hurt wildlife. Cats will attack all sorts of tiny animals just for the chase, and if your cat goes outside you’ve probably come across a dead mouse or two more than once. Keep your kitties inside to prevent harm.
Fence off pools
If an animal that can’t swim wanders into your pool, it could drown there. Plus, even if they just take a quick dip, the chemicals can be harmful to them. To prevent this from happening, keep your pool as fenced off as you can, so animals are deterred. You can also purchase a retractable pool cover if you are especially concerned.
Grow local plants
Keeping a good supply of food is vital. Have local plants and flora to provide the animals with the kinds of food that are in their habitats. This will keep you from seeing any dangerous animals, as well, because you’ll only see animals that eat mostly plants.
