The last thing we expect when relaxing in our homes is an animal to make its way inside and disrupt our peace. Wild animals, no matter how small, can be dangerous, especially when they are in an unfamiliar environment. Raccoons can get in your home through an open vent, dog/cat door, or even by ripping a hole in the wall. Here is what you should do if a raccoon gets inside of your home.
Close off Area
If the raccoon is in the basement or attic, it’s easier to close off the area so that they do not have access to the rest of the home. This keeps them in one place while you call Shumaker Animal Control.
If the raccoon is in more of a common area, close the doors to the rest of your home so that it can’t roam around. Be sure to clear the area of both pets and children. While raccoons don’t typically initiate attacks, they may act out of fear.
Create Exit Routes
If you believe the raccoon may have built a nest somewhere in the home, you want to contact Shumaker Animal Control to ensure that the situation is handled properly. Sometimes, however, raccoons accidentally make their way into the home from an open door, normally drawn in by the smell of food.
In this case, you want to open up as many doors that lead outside as possible. You can also open windows if there are no screens on them.
Carefully Guide Them
You do not want to get too close to a raccoon in your home. Instead, there are natural ways to try and shoo the raccoon away if they don’t go out of the door or window on their own. Raccoons prefer the dark, so turning on all the lights will help guide them out of the door.
You could also turn on the TV or radio, as they don’t like loud noises. If neither of these options work, try placing a food trail going out into the yard to get the animal outside. Once it’s out of your home, quickly close all possible entrances.
